The Dunedin Airport (English Dunedin International Airport , IATA code: DUD, ICAO NZDN) is the southernmost international airport of New Zealand , opening up the city Dunedin and the regions Otago and Southland . It is located near the village of Momona in the Taieri Plains around 30 kilometers southwest of Dunedin city center.
In bad wind or weather conditions that make landing impossible at Queenstown Airport, about 180 kilometers to the west, Dunedin Airport often serves as an alternate airport. Especially in the New Zealand winter, Queenstown Airport can often be closed at very short notice due to gusts of wind or snowdrifts. The onward transport of the passengers from Dunedin to Queenstown then usually takes place by coach.
Development of passenger numbers:
- 1963: 100,000
- 1995: 520,000
- 2000: 481,000
- 2015: 1,000,000 (forecast)
In 2000, 19,000 aircraft movements were carried out. For 2015, 38,000 are forecast.
