The Richard Pearse Airport , sometimes Timaru Airport called, (IATA: TIU; ICAO NZTU) is a small regional airport in Timaru on the South Island of New Zealand .

The airport is located around 13 km north of Timaru city ​​center and can be reached from New Zealand State Highway 1 , which passes around 2 km to the east .

Airport description

The airport was named after the New Zealander Richard Pearse , an aviation pioneer who is said to have succeeded in a powered flight before the Wright brothers . The small airport has a 1280 m long asphalt runway and two grass runways for small-engine aircraft and, in addition to small private aircraft, is served exclusively by Air New Zealand , which only serves the Timaru - Wellington route.
