The Nelson Airport is an airport in Nelson , New Zealand. With around 800,000 passengers per year, Nelson Airport is the fifth largest airport in the country, after Auckland , Christchurch , Wellington and Queenstown .

In 2006, the airport was granted restricted status as an international airport and has been handling private foreign planes since then. In terms of scheduled flights, Nelson Airport is New Zealand's fourth busiest. On average there are 90 flight movements per day, during operating hours an aircraft takes off or lands every 4.5 minutes. The airfield is the base of the airline Air Nelson ( Air New Zealand Link ), which offers domestic flights with De Havilland DHC-8-300 . The airline is aiming to expand its base in Nelson and intends to invest several million dollars in infrastructure, including a maintenance hangar for the DHC-8-300, for which the current facilities are too small.
