Nature Heritage Fund

The Nature Heritage Fund is a countervailable ministerial fund in New Zealand that was set up in 1990 with the aim of protecting indigenous forests in the country and later other areas worthy of protection. The Nature Heritage Fund office is based in Wellington .

history

The fund was founded in 1990 under the name Forest Heritage Fund by the then New Zealand government under the New Zealand Labor Party in Wellington. At the time, the fund was focused exclusively on the protection of forest areas. This changed in 1998 when the fund was expanded to include non-forest areas and was therefore renamed the Nature Heritage Fund . In 2015, the government celebrated the 25th anniversary of the fund, which by then had protected 341,881  hectares of land that was in critical condition with regard to its ecosystem, for a total of over NZ $ 162 million over the 25 years had spent. This means that the fund has been able to protect 1.3% of the area of ​​New Zealand by then.

Responsibilities

While the Department of Conservation is responsible for the administration and compliance with nature conservation in the protected areas, the Ministry of Conservation controls the fund and the independent Nature Heritage Fund Committee , which is appointed by the responsible minister, processes and makes recommendations on the Fund submitted applications and proposals.

The appointment of the members of the committee is based on Section 56 of the Conservation Act 1987 .

In addition to state, local and regional authorities and organizations, NGOs and private landowners can also apply to the fund .
