The National League South (also known as Vanarama National League South in connection with sponsorships ) is a division on the second level of the National League , below the National League and parallel to the National League North . It is also the second highest league within the National League system and the sixth highest league in English football overall.

Conference South was introduced in 2004 as part of a major restructuring of English amateur football (so-called non-league football ). The champion is automatically promoted to the Conference National at the end of a season. In addition, the playoff winner, who had completed the season between second and fifth position and won two elimination games and was then able to defeat the analogously determined playoff winner from the Conference North, was also allowed to move up to the Conference National. Since the Conference National was increased from 22 to 24 clubs in 2006, both play-off winners rose at the end of the 2005/06 season. This regulation will also be retained in future seasons, so that two teams will be promoted from Conference South. The last three clubs from Conference South are relegated to a third level league , which was reduced to a one-time two clubs due to the restructuring in the 2005/06 season.
