Michael Zorc (born August 25, 1962 in Dortmund ) is a German sports official . As a midfielder he was active for Borussia Dortmund . After retiring from his career, he switched to the management of the club in 1998 and has been its sports director since 2005 .
Life
Michael Zorc is the son of the amateur national player Dieter Zorc , who played for VfL Bochum in the Bundesliga in 1971/72 .
Michael Zorc had already been a professional at Borussia Dortmund for one year under coach Branko Zebec when he graduated from high school in 1982. He then did his military service in the sports promotion group of the Bundeswehr in Essen-Kupferdreh and then began studying economics at the University of Dortmund . He broke this off after four semesters.
Active career
society
Zorc came to Borussia as a teenager in 1978 from the Dortmund local club TuS Eving-Lindenhorst . Because of his long hair, he was nicknamed "Susi" by his teammate Rolf Rüssmann , which is still used by his fans today. Michael Zorc made his debut at BVB in the 1981/82 season .
In the next season, Zorc established himself in the defensive midfield as a core force of the club. In the following years he fought with Borussia Dortmund several times against relegation. At the end of the 1985/86 season , Dortmund finished 16th and played in the relegation against Fortuna Cologne to stay in the top German division. After Cologne won the first leg 2-0, Zorc, who had already scored ten goals in the regular season, scored the equalizer in the 54th minute with a penalty in his team's 3-1 second leg win in Dortmund. Since the away goals rule was not yet applied in the relegation at that time, there was a playoff between both teams in the Düsseldorf Rheinstadion . BVB won this 8-0; Zorc scored two goals. The following season, BVB finished fourth in the season. Zorc increased his goalscoring to 14 hits.
At the beginning of the 1988/89 season , Zorc was appointed team captain. Borussia Dortmund experienced one of the most successful phases in the club's history this season and won the DFB Cup after a 4-1 final win over Werder Bremen . With the exception of the second round match against FC 08 Homburg , in which he was not used, Zorc had previously scored a goal in every game of the competition and prepared the 2-1 opening goal by Frank Mill in the final . In 1991/92 BVB was runner-up behind VfB Stuttgart simply because of the worse goal difference. Zorc, however, missed almost the entire first half of the season, contributing five goals in the end of the season.
In the 1992/93 season , Borussia Dortmund reached the final of the UEFA Cup . Zorc scored three goals in the course of the competition, including the 2-0 final score of the semi-final first leg against AJ Auxerre after he had missed a penalty a few minutes earlier. In the second leg, which went to penalties , Zorc converted the first penalty. Both finals against Juventus Turin were lost. In the first leg, Zorc was substituted in the 70th minute, he missed the second leg.
In the 1994/95 season , Borussia Dortmund won the German soccer championship for the first time since the Bundesliga was founded . Zorc scored a hat trick in a 4-0 win against Hamburger SV on matchday 17 and ended the season with 15 goals as the most dangerous player on his team. In the following season , BVB defended the title, with Zorc again having scored the most goals of all Dortmund players with 15 goals.
At the beginning of the 1996/97 season , the club signed Paulo Sousa from the Champions League winner Juventus Turin for Zorc's position . According to his own statements, Zorc was thinking about a club change for the first time at this point, with offers from Hamburger SV , for example . But he stayed in Dortmund. Despite the new competition, Zorc was still part of the team's regular staff at the beginning of the first half of the season, but had to accept shorter deployment times as the season progressed. After he had previously been placed at least in the event of injuries to other players, coach Ottmar Hitzfeld , who was dissatisfied with Zorc's performance , preferred the young talents Christian Timm and Wladimir But to him on matchday 30 against Schalke 04 , while Zorc did not play until the 75th. Minute, was substituted on, but scored the 1-0 winning goal. Zorc then described the goal as "probably the greatest satisfaction I've had in my footballing career so far." The relationship between captain and coach has been strained since then. In Borussia's 3-1 win against Juventus Turin in the 1996/97 UEFA Champions League final , Zorc was only substituted on in the 89th minute.
Before the next season, President Gerd Niebaum extended Zorc's contract with a handshake without consulting Michael Meier and when Hitzfeld changed to the post of sports director. Even under the new BVB coach Nevio Scala , Zorc's operating times continued to decrease. In the 1997/98 season , Zorc only played two of his 22 Bundesliga appearances over a full 90 minutes. At the World Cup final in December 1997, however, he played from the start and scored the first goal in his team's 2-0 win over Cruzeiro Belo Horizonte . After the season, Zorc ended his career.
He played all of his 463 Bundesliga games for BVB and is the club's record player in the Bundesliga. He scored 131 goals. This puts him - after Bernd Nickel (141 goals) - in second place on the list of midfielders with the most goals scored in the Bundesliga. Only the striker Manfred Burgsmüller scored more goals for BVB in the Bundesliga (135). Zorc was considered one of the safest penalty takers in the Bundesliga (49 of 57 converted). He was the team captain of Borussia Dortmund for many years and was very popular with the fans. He was numbered eight.
National team
Zorc won the title in 1981 with the junior national team of the DFB at the junior soccer world championship . He was used six times during the tournament. He didn't score a goal. He was also a German national player and played a total of seven international matches in 1992 and 1993.
