Georg Zellhofer (born August 25, 1960 in Waidhofen an der Ybbs ) is a former Austrian football player and current coach .

Career

Zellhofer played from 1977 to 1992 in the Austrian Bundesliga with the clubs SK Vorwärts Steyr , VOEST Linz , SK Sturm Graz and LASK and played 196 games in the top Austrian division. After his career as a football player, he began to work extremely successfully as a coach in Austria.

Georg Zellhofer

In July 1996 he took over the coaching position of SV Pasching and led the club from the second national league (fifth highest division) to the Bundesliga in just 6 seasons. In the first season in the Bundesliga ( 2002/03 ) Pasching was temporarily leader of the table and finally ended the season in fifth place. In July 2003, Zellhofer temporarily retired from Pasching as a trainer for health reasons, but took over his position again in January 2004. In the 2003/04 and 2004/05 seasons he reached third and fourth place with Pasching, thus qualifying for the UEFA Cup .

From January 1, 2006 to August 27, 2006, Zellhofer was a trainer at SK Rapid Vienna , where he succeeded Josef Hickersberger , but was dismissed due to the poor results.

On October 23, 2006, Georg Zellhofer was introduced as the successor to Frenkie Schinkels at Rapids arch-rivals FK Austria Vienna . He won his first competitive game at Austria as a coach against Wacker Tirol 4-1. After Austria Wien struggled with relegation concerns for a long time in the 2006/2007 season and wintered on the last place in the table, he led his team to victory in the national cup final on May 1, 2007 (2: 1 against SV Mattersburg ) and thus secured his first title as a club coach. This also meant qualifying for the UEFA Cup. In the championship, his team improved to sixth place by the end of the season.

On March 19, 2008, the cooperation with FK Austria Magna was dissolved, his successor was Dietmar Constantini . In the summer of 2008, Zellhofer was a short-term coach at the Bundesliga club SV Ried ; Zellhofer was not satisfied with the composition of the squad, did not sign a contract and left the club before the start of the season. In January 2009 he signed a contract with SCR Altach until summer 2009.

After he could not prevent relegation with his club, he ended his engagement in Altach and initially hired only as an advisor to his long-term club FC Pasching , later he became head coach and ended the 2009/10 season in first place in the Middle Regional League. However, for legal reasons, FC Pasching was not allowed to advance to the first division.

At the end of June 2010, Zellhofer finally accepted the offer to look after the Olympic selection in Bahrain through the mediation of Josef Hickersberger. Hickersberger himself had taken over the senior national team of Bahrain again in early June .

In November, Zellhofer's and Bahrain's U23 team parted ways. A few days later, on November 11, 2010, Zellhofer signed a contract with the traditional Upper Austrian club LASK Linz . On March 1st, he was dismissed from LASK due to continued unsuccessfulness and replaced by Walter Schachner . Most recently, he was at Bundesliga club Altach as a sports director.
