preparation
The preparation should begin in March with two games, the team wanted to play against Turkey on the 27th, first in Wales and three days later in Vienna . The Austrians wanted to play against England in June and then against the Czech Republic in Prague . Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , all games have been canceled.
Finals
At the draw on November 30th, Austria was drawn into the group with the Netherlands and Ukraine. Ukraine had been assigned to the group because, alongside Belgium, they were the only non-hosts in Pot 1 of the top six teams in the qualification and were not allowed in the group with Russia and a host from Pot 1. So only the group with host Netherlands remained. In addition, a team was drawn that still has to qualify in March 2020. The overall balance against the Netherlands is negative. In 19 games there were six wins, four draws and nine losses, with the last six games being lost. The last win against the Dutch came in May 1990 in preparation for the World Cup. There have only been two friendlies against Ukraine, the first in November 2011 was lost 2-1 in Ukraine, and in June 2012 Innsbruck won 3-2.
If the Austrian team wins the group , they would play against the third in Group D, E or F, subject to the retention of the venues in Budapest , and in second place one day earlier in London against the winner of Group A, e.g. B. Italy. If they were one of the four best group thirds, either the winner of Group F with Germany, world champions France or defending champions Portugal in Bucharest or the winner of Group E with Spain in Glasgow would be opponents in the round of 16.
