Meinolf Matthias Hellmund (* 1960 in Troisdorf ; † October 23, 2016 ) was a German geologist and paleontologist .

Life

Meinolf Hellmund studied geology and palaeontology at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Bonn and graduated in 1986 with his diploma thesis on the geology of the area around Rott with special attention to the tertiary flora and fauna . In 1987 he moved to the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz , where he in 1989 with his thesis on the European species of the genus Elomeryx Marsh 1894 (Anthracotheriidae, Artiodactyla, Mammalia) doctorate was.

Meinolf Hellmund then worked as a scientific volunteer at the State Museum for Natural History in Stuttgart and then from 1991 in the archaeological and palaeontological preservation of monuments at the Rheinisches Landesamt für Bodendenkmalpflege in Bonn.

Meinolf Hellmund intensively researched the Rott fossil deposit and made known from this site, among other things, clutches of dragonflies that had become fossilized in the period from 1987 to 1993. He published in part together with his father Winfried Hellmund (1928-2015), who was the director of studies at the Zum Altenforst grammar school in Troisdorf.

On June 1, 1992, Meinolf Hellmund succeeded Günter Krumbiegel as custodian of the Geiseltalsammlung , which in November 2009 was later incorporated into the newly founded central magazine for natural science collections of the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (ZNS) in Halle (Saale) .

Meinolf Hellmund was married to the archaeobotanist Monika Hellmund, née Schäfer.
