Günter Krumbiegel

Günter Krumbiegel (born February 25, 1926 in Leipzig- Lindenau, † December 22, 2014 in Halle ) was a German paleontologist .

Life

Krumbiegel attended the Helmholtz-Gymnasium in Leipzig from 1940 to 1943, but was only able to do his Abitur in 1949 because of the war. From 1949 he studied geology and paleontology at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg with a diploma in 1953 and a doctorate in 1957 ( The limestone deposits in lignite in Central Germany ). From 1958 until his retirement in 1992 he was curator and director of the Geiseltal Museum in Halle (Saale) .

He dealt in particular with the geology and paleontology of tertiary lignite in the Geiseltal near Halle and with amber research (especially from Saxony-Anhalt, the amber deposits in the Goitzsche open-cast lignite mine near Bitterfeld ), working closely with the Muzeum Ziemi of the Polish Academy of Sciences. He has published several books that are also popular science. In total, he wrote over 400 scientific publications.

He was married to Brigitte Krumbiegel, with whom he also published. In 2004 he became an honorary member of the International Amber Association in Gdansk. In 2009 he became an honorary member of the Association of Friends and Patrons of the Bitterfeld District Museum for his support of the Bernstein working group.
