Harald Walther

Harald Walther (born May 17, 1929 in Chemnitz ; † July 2, 2013 ) was a German paleobotanist .

Harald Walther grew up in Scharfenstein and Schkopau . After 1945 Walther came into contact with fossil plants as a result of the Max Güldner company's work on the excavations of the “ Petrified Forest ”. Walther studied at the University of Halle and the TU Dresden . From 1948 he worked as a teacher in Seifhennersdorf , then from 1957 to 1962 at the extended secondary school in Großschönau . He received his doctorate from the TU Dresden in 1968. From 1953 he was a volunteer at the Museum of Mineralogy and Geology in Dresden, and from 1962 he was permanently employed. In 1974 he became senior assistant there and in 1979 curator of the paleobotanical collection. His research focus was on the tertiary flora of Saxony and Bohemia . In 1984 he received his habilitation at the Humboldt University in Berlin with a thesis on flora and climate change in the tertiary. In 1995 Walther became an honorary professor at the University of Leipzig . He also taught at the TU Dresden. From 1996 to 2004 Walther was President of the Isis Natural Science Society in Dresden. He was the author of about 250 scientific articles.

In 1986 he organized the exhibition 350 million years of forest with the Natural History Museum Vienna , which could be seen in various museums. He worked closely with Dieter H. Mai (1934–2013) and Zlatko Kvaček in Prague.

His grave is in the Old Catholic Cemetery in Dresden.
