The Natural Science Society ISIS Dresden eV is an association that sees itself “as a competent forum for the maintenance of interdisciplinary work in the natural sciences as well as a communication center for scientifically oriented institutions in public and politics” and on this basis offers a wide range of lectures.
Origin and history
Today's ISIS is a re-establishment of the Association for the Promotion of Natural History founded on December 19, 1833 in Dresden . In May 1835 the name "ISIS" (based on the goddess Isis to express the cosmopolitanism of the society) was officially approved as the name of the association. The society was open to anyone interested in science, unlike other scientific societies of this time, which were only reserved for the academically educated nobility or the upper bourgeoisie. The purpose of the society was, in particular, the scientific research of Saxony .
A special feature of the ISIS meetings were the presentations: animals, plants, fossils, minerals, etc. were presented and discussed in order to illustrate the various research results to the members. The personal presence and commitment at the club meetings was very important; for members who could not perceive this, there was the status "corresponding member" or "promoting member".
From 1844 there were subject-related sections: for botany , zoology , geology and mineralogy , later mathematics , physics , chemistry and prehistory were added. The results of joint discussions were published in meeting reports and specialist journals.
The ISIS library (almost 14,000 volumes) was transferred to the Saxon State Library in the 1920s , and many other documents were destroyed in 1945. In the meantime, the Society's entire series of journals including their predecessors has been available in digital form at SLUB Dresden since 1846 (see publications and web links).
