Werner Coblenz

Werner Coblenz (born May 24, 1917 in Pirna ; † June 7, 1995 in Kempten (Allgäu) ) was a German prehistoric scientist who mainly worked in Saxony.

Life

Werner Coblenz completed his Abitur in 1936 and then did his Reich Labor Service . In 1936 he began studying prehistory , geology , folklore and anthropology at the University of Berlin , the University of Vienna , the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel , the University of Leipzig and the Philipps University in Marburg . In 1940 he joined the NSDAP ( membership number 7.936.861) and was drafted into the Wehrmacht . He took part in the Second World War and was taken prisoner by the Soviets, from which he was released in 1945. In 1945 he was still a research assistant at the State Museum for Prehistory in Dresden . In 1947 Coblenz did his doctorate with Gero von Merhart in Marburg on grave finds from the Middle Bronze Age in Saxony , the second reviewer was Friedrich Matz the Younger . Coblenz worked at the State Museum for Prehistory in Dresden until 1982 as its director, which in the GDR also carried out the tasks of maintaining regional ground monuments . From 1980 to 1982 he also taught as an honorary professor at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig . In 1982 Coblenz retired. He passed away while on a trip.

Coblenz was a member of the scientific advisory board for local research of the Institute for Geography and Geoecology of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR and was co-author of the series Values ​​of our Homeland . In 1953 he became a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute and in 1962 a full member . In 1963 he became a member of the Historical Commission of the Saxon Academy of Sciences , of which he had been a full member since 1972. Until 1980, Coblenz was chairman of the advisory board for the preservation of monuments at the Ministry of Higher and Technical Schools of the GDR. In 1986 he became a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and 1987 of the British Academy . The Werner Coblenz Prize was named in honor of Werner Coblenz .
