Reiner Groß (born August 3, 1937 in Zwickau ) is a German historian and archivist .

Live and act

Between 1954 and 1960 , Groß studied history , historical auxiliary sciences , pedagogy and archival science at the University of Leipzig and the Humboldt University of Berlin . He then got a job as a scientific archivist at what was then the State Main Archive in Dresden . In 1964 , Groß received his doctorate from the University of Rostock with a dissertation on "The bourgeois agrarian reform in Saxony in the first half of the 19th century" . He then taught at the Institute for Archival Studies at the HU Berlin. In 1975, Groß took over the management of the Dresden State Archives, which he held until 1994. In the meantime he completed his habilitation in 1987 at the Bergakademie Freiberg with a thesis on “Saxony between early capitalist development and bourgeois upheaval (16th – 19th centuries)” . In 1994, Groß followed a call from the Technical University of Chemnitz to the professorship for regional history of Saxony , which he held until his retirement in 2002.

Between 1988 and 2008 Reiner Groß was a full member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences , where he headed the historical commission . Groß is co-editor of the atlas on the history and regional studies of Saxony .

Groß supervised the dissertations of Manfred Wilde , Jörg Brückner and Michael Wetzel , among others .
