Hartmut Haubold (born January 12, 1941 in Halle (Saale) ) is a German paleontologist.

Haubold was involved in excavations in the famous Geiseltal site near his hometown as early as 1959/60 . From 1960 to 1965 he studied geology and paleontology in Halle (diploma thesis: A tracking fauna from the red sandstone of southern Thuringia ) and was then an assistant at the Geological-Paleontological Institute. In 1968 he received his doctorate there with the thesis The tetrapod tracks of the Germanic red sandstone . In 1978 he completed his habilitation with biostratigraphy and fossil facies of permosiles in the Thuringian Forest . In 1978 he became senior assistant and in 1990 lecturer in paleontology. In 1992 he became a professor in Halle. In 2006 he retired .

Haubold was particularly concerned with fossil reptiles, especially dinosaurs and their tracks. In his thesis, he examined the early Rotodactylus -Fährten from the red sandstone of Thuringia, formerly Pseudosuchiern attributed today precursors of dinosaurs similar to the South American (in the 1970s discovered) lagosuchus . In 1990 he described the Emausaurus ernsti from the Lower Jurassic near Greifswald . Haubold also wrote two standard German-language works on dinosaurs and dinosaur tracks.
