Günther Schaumberg (born June 28, 1922 in Eschwege ; † July 1, 2017 there ) was a German art educator , painter , fossil collector and amateur paleontologist .

biography

Schaumberg graduated from high school in Eschwege in 1940 , then served as a soldier in World War II and worked as a painter from 1945 to 1953. He then studied at the Werkakademie in Kassel to become an art teacher (graduated in 1957) and was an art teacher at the grammar school in Eschwege from 1959 to 1984 , where he had been a student himself. He also exhibited as a painter.

He also used his skills as an artist for fossil drawings and reconstructions.

From the 1950s he collected fossils, especially in the Eschwege region, and from the 1970s especially in the copper shale of the Richelsdorf Mountains, and became an internationally known expert on them. He worked particularly with the paleontologist Hans-Peter Schultze in Göttingen .

In 1976, he identified parts of the skeleton of Coelurosauravus as part of a flight apparatus and thus as the oldest reptile with proven gliding . From it come some first descriptions of fossil fish, such as the Euselachier Hopleacanthus richelsdorfensis 1982 Muensterichthys buergeri 1989. He described 1978 the coelacanth Coelacanthus granulatus new. Schaumberg demonstrated the relationship between the fauna of the Hessian-Thuringian copper slate with deposits of the same age in England, Russia and Greenland and published further descriptions of primeval sharks such as Vodnika .

Together with Hartmut Haubold , he wrote a book about the fossils of copper slate.

In 1987 he received the Zittel Medal and in 1997 was made an honorary doctorate from the University of Marburg . Also in 1987 he received the silver badge of honor of the Philippi Society and in 1990 the Philippi Medal for services to nature research in North Hesse .

His collection came to the Kassel Natural History Museum decades before his death .
