Finals
Russia had applied with the Gazprom Arena in Saint Petersburg to host three group matches, as well as a round of 16 or quarter-finals, and was also accepted for three group matches and a quarter-finals. As the FIFA world ranking leader Belgium finished the qualification as the best team, Belgium could not be drawn into the groups with Germany, England, Italy and Spain, which also belonged to the six best teams in the qualification. Since in pot 1, in addition to the Belgians, only the Ukraine was placed as the non-hosting team and this could not be in a group with Russia, the Belgians were assigned to the group with Denmark and Russia before the draw, which UEFA as joint team in December 2017 Organizers of a group had been determined. Only Finland newcomer to the European Championship was drawn. In addition, a draw was made for the Russians to play against Denmark in Copenhagen and thus only have two home games. The Russians had already lost both games against the Belgians in qualifying, which increased the negative record against the Belgians to a total of five defeats and two draws. The Russians first played against Denmark and won a friendly 2-0 in Copenhagen in February 2012. There were two European and two World Cup qualifiers against Finland, all of which were won.
If the Russian team were group winners, they would - subject to the retention of the venues - play against the third in Group A, D, E or F in Bilbao , in second place one day earlier in the first round of 16 in Amsterdam against the second in Group B, e.g. . B. Switzerland. If they were one of the top four group thirds, either the group E winner with Spain or the group F winner with Germany, world champions France or defending champions Portugal would be opponents in the round of 16, where they would then play in Bucharest or Glasgow .
