The Kaliningrad Stadium ( Russian Калининградский Стадион ), also called Arena Baltika , is a football stadium in the Russian city of Kaliningrad (the German city until 1945 was called Königsberg until 1946 ). The facility was one of the venues for the 2018 soccer World Cup and replaced the Baltika Stadium as the venue for the Baltika Kaliningrad soccer club .
history
It was built for the 2018 World Cup. According to this, Kaliningrad received a large stadium in the city center, on the Pregel island of Lomse . Kaliningrad is the westernmost venue for the World Cup.
For this reason, extensive geological and structural engineering studies were carried out on the intended terrain on the Lomse. It was assumed that the construction work for additional reinforcement of the subsoil would require a soil exchange with the Kaliningrad Maritime Canal. The entire site will also have to be paved. At the start of construction in September 2015, 12,000 pillars were set in the ground to support the construction.
The stadium was initially designed for 45,000 spectators in 20,000 temporary seats, which can be reduced to 25,000 after the World Cup. With the approval of FIFA , the number was reduced to around 35,000 places at the beginning of 2015 to reduce costs and improve re-use .
The total costs should be the equivalent of EUR 354 million. In addition to the stadium and the associated infrastructure, several training centers will be built in the area in Zelenogradsk and Pionerski as well as near Guryevsk . In September 2015 it was announced that the contract for the stadium construction would not be signed until the end of October 2015 or the beginning of November 2015.
It was planned that construction of the stadium would begin in late 2014 and end by summer 2017. The planned official opening of the World Cup stadium in Kaliningrad should take place on March 22, 2018 with a test match between the future home team Baltika Kaliningrad and FC Schalke 04 . This game was canceled on February 28th - on the recommendation of the Russian Ministry of Sports - because of the still arctic temperatures in Russia. No football match should be played in the World Cup stadiums before April 11, 2018.
The Kaliningrad Stadium was practically completed at the end of March 2018, and FIFA approved the game. Only the last furnishings had to be installed. The World Cup stadium was opened on April 11, 2018 with the game Baltika Kaliningrad against Krylya Sovetov Samara . At the opening game, the number of spectators was limited to 15,000 for testing purposes. This test was successful, so that larger numbers of visitors could be admitted.
