qualification

For the qualification the Dutch team Germany, Northern Ireland, Belarus (Belarus) and Estonia were drawn.

Georginio Wijnaldum , top Dutch goalscorer of the qualification

In total, bond coach Ronald Koeman , who took over Elftal in March 2018, deployed 25 players, of which only goalkeepers Jasper Cillessen , Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs de Ligt played all eight games. Ryan Babel , Daley Blind and captain Virgil van Dijk each had seven appearances , which were not used in the last game because the team was already qualified, as did Georginio Wijnaldum . Myron Boadu , Donyell Malen and Calvin Stengs played their first international match in a qualifying match.

The top scorer with eight goals was Georginio Wijnaldum , who, along with the best German scorer Serge Gnabry and the second best English scorer Raheem Sterling, was the seventh best scorer in the qualification. Their first international goal was scored by Matthijs de Ligt (to 1: 2 in the 2: 3 defeat against Germany), Frenkie de Jong (to 1: 1) and Donyell Malen (on his debut to take a 3: 2 lead at 4 : 2 win against Germany) and Myron Boadu (on his debut for the 5-0 final against Estonia). A total of ten players contributed to the 23 qualifying goals. The Dutch also benefited from the own goal by Jonathan Tah .

preparation

The preparation should start in March 2020 with two games, with the team first playing in Eindhoven against the USA and three days later in Amsterdam against Spain . Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the games, as well as games against Greece and Wales scheduled for May and June, have been canceled.

Finals

Even before the qualification it was clear that the Dutch team would play two group games in Amsterdam and possibly one game in Bucharest if they qualified . Since Romania could not qualify directly, the Dutch are allowed to play their three group games in Amsterdam. Due to the selection of the venues, the team could not be drawn against England, Italy, Spain and Germany. As the FIFA world ranking leader Belgium finished the qualification as the best team and Ukraine was also one of the sixth best teams in the qualification, neither of them host any group matches, but Ukraine could not join a group with Russia and one of the other five best teams in the qualification, Ukraine was assigned to the Dutch group. Austria and a team that still has to qualify in March 2020 were drawn. The overall balance against Austria is positive. In 19 games there were nine wins, four draws and six losses, with the last six games being won. The last defeat against the Austrians came in May 1990 in preparation for the World Cup. There have only been two friendlies against Ukraine, the first in May 2008 was won 3-0 in Rotterdam , and then in August 2010 the Ukraine scored 1-1

If the Dutch team wins the group , they would play against the third in Group D, E or F in Budapest - subject to the retention of the venues - and in second place one day earlier in London against the winner of Group A, e.g. B. Italy. If they were one of the four best group thirds, either the winner of Group F with Germany, world champions France or defending champions Portugal in Bucharest or the winner of Group E with Spain in Glasgow would be opponents in the round of 16.
