Games of the Dutch team
Preliminary round
In addition to games against Scotland and the CIS, the draw resulted in the duel with the old rival Germany , which was additionally charged with the so-called spitting affair around Frank Rijkaard and Rudi Völler after the events in the round of 16 at the 1990 World Cup .

The Dutch selection started the tournament with a 1-0 win against Scotland. Bergkamp scored the decisive goal in the 75th minute. In the second group game against the CIS, the teams drew goalless.
Both the Netherlands and Germany needed at least one point to advance to the semi-finals on their own. The Dutch surprised the German team with enormous pressure from the start. And so they took the lead in the 4th minute with a head through Rijkaard. In the 15th minute Witschge made it 2-0. In the second half, a more open game developed when Jürgen Klinsmann scored the next goal in the 54th minute. The Germans now put enormous pressure and had good chances to score, but ran into the decisive counterattack in the 72nd minute, which Bergkamp closed with his second tournament goal to make it 3-1.
Semifinals
As group winners of group B, the Dutch selection played on June 22nd in Ullevi against the group runners-up in group A, the surprise team from Denmark . The duel of the high favorites and defending champion against the underdog is considered the most dramatic game of the European Championship in Sweden.

After Henrik Larsen scored the opening goal for the Danish selection in the 5th minute, an open exchange of blows developed. In the 23rd minute Bergkamp equalized, but Larsen scored with his second goal in the game ten minutes later, the renewed lead for the underdog. In the second half of the game, the Dutch team pushed for the goal guarded by Peter Schmeichel and managed to equalize in the 86th minute through Rijkaard, which at least saved extra time. In the 30 minutes of additional playing time there was no further hit, so the penalty shoot-out had to bring the decision. Ironically, van Basten, the team's superstar, missed his penalty. Since all shooters scored on the other side, the top favorite had to travel home after the semi-finals.
