Arnold Westphal (* 1399 in Lübeck ; † January 31, 1466 ) was initially a professor, rector of the Universities of Erfurt, Leipzig and Rostock and from 1450 the 22nd  Bishop of Lübeck .

biography

Arnold was born the son of Lübeck councilor and member of the Hermann Westphal († 1433) circle society . His brother Johann became mayor of Lübeck in 1461 .

He studied at the University of Leipzig from 1418 to 1421 and completed his studies there with a Bachelor of Arts. In the same year, he continued his education at the University of Rostock continued and completed his doctorate there as a licentiate of rights. In the academic year 1428/29 he became rector of the University of Erfurt and represented it at the Council of Basel in 1432 . In Erfurt he did his doctorate in canon law. In 1436 Westphal became professor for canon law and rector of the University of Leipzig. In 1443 he was appointed to the University of Rostock and was elected rector there. Presumably he was elected dean at Lübeck Cathedral as early as 1444 . He was elected bishop there in 1449. He was ordained the following year.

Arnold Westphal was a confidante of the last Duke of Holstein, Adolf VIII, and acted as an intermediary in the transition from Holstein to King Christian I of Denmark . The Hanseatic city of Lübeck was represented as mayor at the negotiations in Segeberg in 1460 by his brother Johann Westphal and his father-in-law Wilhelm von Calven .

Bishop Arnold, together with King Christian I and the Schwerin Bishop Werner Wolmers, brokered peace in the Lüneburg Prelate War for salt rights in the Hanseatic city of Lüneburg in 1462 .

In 1465 he also mediated between the Teutonic Order and Poland in Thorn . The Second Peace of Thorn was not concluded until the following year after further papal mediators were involved.

Westphal was buried in the choir of the Lübeck Cathedral.
