Johann Westphal (* around 1397 in Lübeck ; † June 11, 1474 ) was a Lübeck mayor .

Westphal came from a Lübeck patrician family, which today is an example of the power control and influence of the Lübeck patrician families of the late Middle Ages in what was then the Diocese of Lübeck . He was the son of the council member and a member of the extremely influential circle society Hermann Westphal in Lübeck . His brother was the Lübeck Bishop Arnold Westphal . Johann Westphal was married to Margaretha von Calven, the daughter of the mayor Wilhelm von Calven , and the father of Wilhelm Westphal , also Bishop of Lübeck from 1506 to 1509, as well as the councilor Heinrich Westfal . His daughter Elisabeth married the future mayor Heinrich Brömse .

Career

Johann Westphal was elected to the city council in 1447 and appointed mayor in 1461 . As early as 1445 he was on his first diplomatic mission with King Christian I of Denmark in Flensburg . In 1458 he traveled to Gdansk to negotiate peace between the kings of Poland and Denmark . At the same time there were attempts to settle disputes between the Hanseatic cities of Danzig and Riga . He also participated in the continuation of the negotiations between Denmark and Poland in Lübeck in 1459. In 1460 he represented the city together with his father-in-law Wilhelm von Calven and Johann Lüneburg during the talks in Segeberg about the takeover of Holstein by King Christian I of Denmark . In 1461 he represented the council in the settlement of a dispute between the cities of Wismar and Kolberg in Rostock . Most recently, he took part in the peace negotiations between King Christian I of Denmark and King Charles VIII of Sweden in 1469 . He is listed several times as a documentary witness in Lübeck citizens' wills .

He was a member of the circle society .
