Host Sweden dominated Group 1 and became one of the tournament favorites. In the first game against France, both teams acted cautiously. Jan Eriksson gave Sweden the lead in the first half and Jean-Pierre Papin equalized in the 59th minute. In the game against Denmark, a goal from Tomas Brolin in the 58th minute brought the decision. England took an early lead against Sweden through David Platt . After Sweden equalized in the second half, the chance for England to advance still seemed great. But Sweden's best player Tomas Brolin ensured an early exit for the English with his second tournament goal to make it 2-1 in the 83rd minute.

Sweden | - | Germany | 2: 3 (0: 1) |
In the semifinals between the host country and the current world champion, one of the best players of the tournament showed perhaps his best performance in the national jersey : Thomas Häßler . He was a game designer and often mixed up the Swedish defensive line with dribbles. With a remarkable free kick in the 11th minute he also gave the Germans a 1-0 lead. The early lead stabilized the team, and so they could forget the bitter defeat against Holland. In the second half, Karl-Heinz Riedle increased to 2-0. Tomas Brolin brought the Swedes up again with a penalty, but in the 89th minute Riedle made the final decision again. Kennet Andersson's last minute goal was just a correction of the result.
