Anoplosaurus ("unarmored lizard") is a genus of dinosaurs that belongs to the group of Nodosauridae . Fossils of these animals are from the early Upper Cretaceous ( Cenomanium ) and were found in Cambridgeshire , England . At times, Anoplosaurus was also assigned to a related group, the Ornithopoda .

history

The eponymous species (type species) Anoplosaurus curtonotus , was described in 1879 by Harry Govier Seeley on the basis of a find that consisted of fragments of a lower jaw , several vertebrae of the neck, back and sacrum, parts of the shoulder girdle, fragments of the humerus and thigh bones and other bone parts consisted of the foot, shin and ribs. He assumed that it could possibly be a hatchling since it was small in size.

Other researchers came to the conclusion that there was an armored lizard, but Franz Nopcsa suspected in 1923 that most of the bones found belong to an animal from the Camptosaurus group and other bone parts belong to a species of the Acanthopholis genus .

This assumption was followed with minor modifications until Pereda-Suberbiola and Barrett re-examined the material in 1999. They wrote that the finds belong to a primitive nodosaur who, due to its youth, had not yet formed a tank at the time of death. All subsequent reviews followed this interpretation.
