Acanthopholis is a genus of bird pelvic dinosaurs (Ornithischia) from the group of Ankylosauria knownonly from sparse fossil finds .
The Acanthopholis finds have so far been limited to individual teeth, skull fragments, bone plates, vertebrae and parts of the limbs, but it is uncertain whether they all belong to the same genus. While the affiliation to the ankylosaurs is certain, it is hardly possible to give more detailed information about the appearance of this dinosaur . It was probably covered with armor made of bone plates, and there were spikes in the neck and shoulder area. Like all ankylosaurs, it moved quadruped and was a herbivore.
The Acanthopholis finds come from England and were first described by Thomas Henry Huxley in 1867. The name is derived from the Greek words akantha (= "sting" or "thorn") and pholis (= "scales"). Type species is A. horridus , other species described are A. macrocercus , A. eucercus (a very dubious find from two vertebrae), A. platypus and A. stereocercus . All of these species are considered nomina dubia , which means that too few finds are available for an exact description of the species.
The findings are in the late Lower and Upper early chalk ( Aptian to Cenomanian dated) with an age from 126 to 94 million years ago.
