Halszka Osmólska

Halszka Osmólska (born September 15, 1930 in Poznan ; † March 31, 2008 ) was a Polish paleontologist .

Life

Born in Poznan in 1930, she graduated in 1952 from the Faculties of Biology and Earth Sciences at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan . In the same year she moved to Warsaw , where she received a master's degree in biology from the University of Warsaw in 1955 . Seven years later she received her doctorate there in biology and geosciences. Since 1955 she was a member of the Institute for Paleontology and was later appointed professor. She worked for the institute for more than 50 years and was its director from 1984 to 1989. From 1975 to 1992 she was part of the editorial team of the scientific journal Acta Palaeontologica Polonica .

While at the beginning of her scientific work she dealt with the trilobites from the Devonian and Carboniferous of Poland and Eurasia , she began in 1963 with her work on dinosaurs from the sedimentary rocks of the Gobi desert, in particular on theropods . She became known as the co-author of the book The Dinosauria with David Weishampel and others, which was published in 1990 and 2004 and is considered a standard work in paleontology. She was the first to describe several new genera of dinosaurs, and several genera and species were named after her, including Velociraptor osmolskae , Osmolskina and Halszkaraptor . She often worked with her colleague Teresa Maryańska .

In 2003 she was made an honorary member of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology .

She had a son with her husband Tadeusz Osmólski.
