Rinchen Barsbold ( Mongolian Ринченгийн Барсболд , Rintschengiin Barsbold ; * 1935 in Ulaanbaatar ) is a leading Mongolian vertebrate paleontologist. He works at the Institute of Geology in Ulaanbaatar.

Barsbold was instrumental in extensive dinosaur discoveries in the Gobi Desert , partly with Soviet and Polish scientists. The Gobi Desert has been known as a dinosaur site since the discovery of Roy Chapman Andrews in the 1930s. Barsbold is particularly an expert on predatory dinosaurs, on which he did his PhD, and specifically Ornithomimidae . Early in the 1980s he pointed out various bird characteristics of predatory dinosaurs in Mongolia and advocated the ancestry of the birds from such dinosaurs, which later received support in the West through the discovery of feathered dinosaurs in the 1990s ( Philip Currie ).

In 1994 he was one of those who identified a clutch of oviraptors , which led to the assumption that they brooded like birds.

The hadrosaur Barsboldia and the oviraptorid Rinchenia are named after him.

He himself described the Ornithomimidae genera Gallimimus , Garudimimus , Anserimimus , the Enigmosaurus , Conchoraptor , Adasaurus , Harpymimus , Ingenia , the Oviraptoridae family .

In 2010 he received the Romer Simpson Medal .
