Society of Vertebrate Paleontology

The Society of Vertebrate Paleontology (SVP) is a Scientific Society for Vertebrate - Paleontology based in the USA ( Deerfield , Illinois ). It was founded in 1940 and has around 2300 members (2010). A general meeting takes place every year.

It sees itself as a society with an exclusively scientific and educational focus. She actively opposes the teaching of intelligent design and creationism and promotes the training of teachers in theories of evolution . The Society also played a role in strengthening the laws against the collection of fossils on public land in the United States ( the US Congress' Palaeontological Resources Preservation Act ).

President is Philip J. Currie .

Awards and publications

The most important of the prizes awarded is the Romer-Simpson Medal , but there are also prizes for work by students (Romer Prize), a prize for fossil collectors (Skinner Award), for artists (Lanzendorf PaleoArt Prize) and for Taxidermy.

The Society of Vertebrate Paleontology publishes various series of publications:

  • The Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology, founded in 1980 at the University of Oklahoma and taken over by SVP in 1984.
