Zhou Mingzhen

Zhou Mingzhen or Chow Minchen ( Chinese  周 明 镇 , Pinyin Zhōu Míngzhèn ; born November 9, 1918 , † January 4, 1996 ) was a Chinese vertebrate paleontologist and geologist .

Zhou graduated from Chongqing University in 1943 and received his master's degree from the University of Miami in 1948 . In 1950 he received his PhD from Lehigh University . After returning to China, he conducted research at the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing and curator at the Natural History Museum in Beijing.

Zhou specialized in the early Tertiary mammal fauna and was the first to discover finds from the Paleocene in China. In addition to his paleontological work, he also dealt with the history of paleontology in China; he wrote about regarding the expiry of exploration of the Homo erectus of Zhoukoudian .

He had been a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences since 1980 and in 1993 received the Romer-Simpson Medal , a distinguished honor in vertebrate paleontology . In 1979 he was elected director of the Mammalogical Society of China , which is dedicated to the promotion of mammalogy in China. In 1979 he became an honorary member of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology .

He was married to Chai Meichen (1917-1993) and the couple had two children.
