Jimmy Wang Yu

Jimmy Wang Yu ( Chinese  王羽 , Pinyin Wáng Yǔ , Jyutping Wong 4 Jyu 5 ; born March 28, 1944 in Wuxi , Jiangsu Province , China ) is a Chinese actor , director and film producer in the Eastern and Martial Arts genre .

biography

Prior to his acting career, Wang Yu was a soldier in the Republic of China and a swimmer in Hong Kong. In 1963 he went to the Shaw Brothers studio , his first film The Temple of the Red Lotus came out in 1965. Many more films followed, mostly several per year, some of which were dubbed in Germany.

In the 1970s he began working as a director, producer and screenwriter. Thus, under his direction, among others, A Fist Like a Hammer (1971) and The Shaolin Bay of Death , for both of which he wrote the script, as well as The Shaolin Death Song (1977). In the 1980s, however, he was hardly active. At the beginning of the 1990s, several films followed with him as an actor and three films in which he was involved as a producer.

Trivia

  • A special feature are his numerous films in which he played one-armed heroes and which are now among his greatest and most famous successes in Europe. His first such film, The One-Armed Swordsman , was the first film to hit more than a million admissions in Hong Kong. Wang Yu is considered to be one of the earliest anti-hero actors and so was the co-founder of a new genre.
  • Unlike many of his colleagues, Wang Yu was not a fully trained martial artist. Most of his experience comes from street fights, in which he was often involved as a teenager. His aggressive and sometimes imperfect fighting style is one of his distinctive features to this day.
  • Wang Yu was discovered and used early by the director Chang Cheh, as were many of his later colleagues.
