Police Story ( Chinese  警察 故事 , Pinyin Jǐngchá Gùshì , Jyutping Ging 2 caat 3 Gu 3 si 6 ) is an action comedy from Hong Kong by and with Jackie Chan from 1985. The film was a commercial success and meant for Jackie Chan final breakthrough.

action

Police Detective Kevin could finally have arrested drug lord Tom Ku, as his secretary is now supposed to testify as a witness against him. However, this disappears before she can testify and so Ku is released again due to lack of evidence. He now wants to take revenge for his arrest on Kevin by attaching the murder of another police officer to him. Kevin is then hunted by both the police and the criminals, but he tries both to prove his innocence and to finally arrest the drug lord. In a large shopping center there is a spectacular final battle, through which Kevin can ultimately triumph.

Emergence

Jackie Chan was inspired for this film by the film The Protector .

While sliding down the lights in the mall, Jackie Chan dislocated her back and burned her palms.

Reviews

“Incredible stunts. The ideal popcorn movie "

“The film lives through its action and fight scenes. In Police Story, Chan can fully live out his talent as a stunt director. The fight scenes are characterized by great realism. You can feel that Chan has not forgotten his origins and still takes off his hat to the Asian art of his stunt colleagues. "

effect

The film was later partially imitated by American directors. The final chase through the slums in Michael Bay's 2003 action film Bad Boys II is very reminiscent of the chase through the slums at the beginning of Police Story . A chase scene with a double-decker bus in which passers-by fall through the windshield into the street due to an abrupt stop was copied by Sylvester Stallone in his 1989 film Tango and Cash .

Trivia

  • Due to the high number of stunts with glass, the film was also called "Glass Story" by the crew.
  • The film used sugar glass that was twice as thick as is normally used in films to achieve a higher degree of realism. However, this also increased the risk of injury.
  • There was an accident in the bus stunt scene. It was planned that the stunt people would fly through the window, but the braking effect of the bus was different than expected, so that the men crashed onto the asphalt instead of the specially prepared cars, as was planned.
  • Chan chose the title "Police Story" because he had to deal with many imitators in Hong Kong. For example, when he was producing Drunken Master, several films about drunken boxing were announced. So he decided on this title, especially since there was no Kung Fu police film at the time, and thus prevented attempts at imitation.
  • During the final stunt, in which Chan slipped down a rod of fairy lights, he sustained severe cuts and burns.
  • The name Police Story is used in five other Jackie Chan films: Police Story 2 , Police Story 3 - also known as Super Cop , Police Story 4 - First Strike - known in Germany as Jackie Chans Erstschlag , New Police Story and Police Story - Back for Law . However, only Police Story 2 is a direct sequel. “Super Cop” and “First Strike” only have the main character, his girlfriend and one of the superiors as similarities with the first part. No reference is made to the first two parts either. In “New Police Story” even the name of the protagonist is different; it is a completely independent film.
  • During the credits, both failed scenes and unsuccessful stunt acts are played, some of which show the real injuries of the actors and stunt people.

German versions

Since May 2005 there has been an uncut version of the film in Germany for the first time, which is approved for people aged 16 and over. All previously available versions, FSK 16 and also FSK 18, were shortened. The FSK 18 version, which was also indexed in Germany until February 28, 2002, misses about 16 minutes of comedy and action sequences, as it corresponds to the shortened US version. The old FSK 16 version is also shortened by about nine minutes of violence and thus comes to a total length of about 25 minutes. The scenes that were missing in the old FSK 18 version were not dubbed in the uncut version and are therefore available in the Cantonese original with German subtitles. In the German version, Jackie Chan is dubbed by Arne Elsholtz , who also lends his voice to Tom Hanks.
