Police Story 3 ( Chinese  警察 故事 III 超級 警察 , Pinyin Jǐngchá Gùshì Sān Chāojí Jǐngchá , Jyutping Ging 2 caat 3 Gu 3 si 6 Saam 1 Ciu 1 kap 1 Ging 2 caat 3 , alternatively: Police Story 3 - Supercop or just Supercop ) is an action and martial arts film directed in Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur in 1992, starring Jackie Chan and Michelle Yeoh . After Police Story and Police Story 2, it is the third part in the series of the same name.

action

The "super cop" Chan and his colleague, Inspector Yang, are an alleged gangster couple trying to get to the big drug lord Chaibat in order to stop him. The first part of the plan succeeds when they can win the trust of the brother of Chaibat through a rescue operation from prison. And the authorities have not been idle either and have meanwhile arrested the drug lord's wife.

But then, during further investigations in Kuala Lumpur, the police couple happened to meet Chan's girlfriend May, who would not have suspected him here. As a result, the cover is blown and the gangsters kidnap May to blackmail the drug lord's wife. A rapid chase ensues, at the end of which the police can triumph.

criticism

“This time too, Jackie Chan proves to be a guarantor for spectacular and humorous action scenes - whereby the stunts surpass everything that has come before. At the finale on a steam locomotive, even the toughest stunt experts in Hollywood should go green with envy. "

- Video Plus

“In terms of martial arts, drama and spectacular stunts, the last third surpasses almost everything that Jackie Chan has delivered up to then. The swipes against the Red Chinese drill are funny. Would that still be possible today? "

Frames

After the success of Rumble in the Bronx in the USA, the film was released again, but with a new dubbing, new soundtrack and 5 scenes shortened.

Individual evidence

  • Highlights of the film are a fight in the jungle, Jackie Chan's helicopter stunt and the final battle on the moving train.
  • Jackie Chan dislocated his jaw while filming. When jumping onto the rope ladder hanging from a helicopter, it was not possible to secure it, failure to do so would have been fatal. Michelle Yeoh's most dangerous self-performed stunt was jumping on the motorcycle onto the moving train, and the stuntman representing her broke his leg during rehearsals.

Trivia

  • In the German version, the main role is called Jackie Chan (or Kevin Chan in his predecessors).
  • Jackie gives April 7, 1958 as his birthday in the film. In reality, he was also born on the same day, just 4 years ago.
  • Further information about the main character, such as B. his body measurements, martial arts experience etc. also match the real ones of Jackie Chan.
  • Especially at the beginning of the film, the differences between the People's Republic of China and the city-state of Hong Kong , which was then still under British occupation, are discussed. In doing so, the impression of class differences emerges unintentionally. Hong Kong looks like a modern city, while the rest of the People's Republic looks like a backward society. In reality, the cities of Beijing and Shanghai in particular are thriving economic cities , which was also the case back then.
  • Actress Michelle Yeoh's looks and fighting style had a huge influence on the design of the character Ling Xiaoyu in the Tekken video game series.
  • Due to the great success of Rumble in the Bronx in the USA, this film was shown in US theaters six months after Rumble in the Bronx, but it was produced 4 years earlier.
  • This film and Jackie Chan's First Strike - also known as Police Story 4: First Strike - are only indirect sequels of the first two "Police Story" films. Only the main character and one of his superiors appear in all films. No reference is made to the first two parts either. New Police Story from 2004 is a completely independent film.
  • Rapper Warren G is producing a cover version of Tina Turner's hit What's Love Got To Do With It , which can be heard in the US version of the film on the soundtrack CD.

Awards

  • Hong Kong Film Awards 1993: Nomination for "Best Action Choreography" (Stanley Tong), "Best Actor" (Jackie Chan).
