Rumble in the Bronx ( Chinese  紅 番 區 , alternatively: Red Bronx ) is an action and martial arts film with Jackie Chan filmed in Hong Kong and Canada in 1994 .

action

Keung (pronounced Kjang ) from Hong Kong visits his uncle Bill in the Bronx , New York , because he is getting married. Bill previously ran a small grocery store, which he is now selling to a woman named Elaine to retire. Keung promises his uncle, when he goes on his honeymoon , to give Elaine a little help so that she can get off to a smooth start with her new business.

But already on the first day Keung messes with a few gangsters from a motorcycle gang under the leader Tony, when they want to steal Elaine and demand protection money. In addition, after a shootout between the local mafia and diamond smugglers, a gang member accidentally falls into the hands of a bag of diamonds , which he hides with Danny, a child who drives a wheelchair with Keung . Keung is now so angry with the motorcycle gang that he breaks into their headquarters and beats the gang until they accept Keung's offer of reconciliation. Not a second too early, because now the Mafia wants their diamonds back. However, after a rapid chase with an airboat , Keung can also eliminate this danger.

criticism

  • “The plot is just the hook for spectacular action sequences. Jackie Chan's breakthrough film in the west brings this Fred Astaire of martial arts to the fore, the rest (plot, dialogue, acting, etc.) is negligible. "(Zoom)
  • “That we can still experience that: a thrashing film from the supposed cinema developing country Hong Kong finds its way onto German screens, presumably because Rumble in the Bronx won at Hong Kong's box offices like no other film before and even in the USA a very considerable box office -Success. "(Cinema)
  • "An unambitious but entertaining action film with virtuoso choreographed stunts and a childlike, naive love of chaos." ( Lexicon of international films )

Others

  • The film marks Jackie Chan's breakthrough in the United States . The film was very successful in both Hong Kong and the USA, with grossing over 10 million US dollars in the USA alone .
  • There is an American version from which some scenes have been cut out, this is only 87 minutes long and a German version is only 85 minutes long.
  • Due to cost reasons, the film was filmed mainly in Vancouver and not in New York. The graffiti therefore had to be removed again and again in the evening and an attempt was first made not to film the mountains in the background, but some of them can be seen in later scenes.
  • There are 7 different trailers of the film, only 6 of which were released with German dubbing.
  • The song "Kung Fu" by the band Ash is played in the credits. The song pays homage to Jackie Chan and his films.

  • Hong Kong Film Awards 1996: Nominations in the categories "Best Actor" (Jackie Chan), "Best Actress" (Anita Mui), "Best Editing" (Peter Cheung), "Best Newcomer" (Francoise Yip), "Best Supporting Actress" (Francoise Yip) and "Best Film".
