Life

Kuhn-Schnyder studied natural sciences at the ETH Zurich with the aim of becoming a teacher and graduated in 1927. He studied in particular zoology with Karl Hescheler . He then became a main teacher and finally rector at the district school in Bremgarten , but at the same time did his doctorate in zoology at the ETH Zurich under Hescheler ( contributions to knowledge of the mammalian fauna of Switzerland since the Neolithic , Revue Suisse de Zoologie, volume 39). In 1940 he became senior assistant at the Zoological Museum at the University of Zurich . In 1947 he completed his habilitation and in 1955 became associate professor at the University of Zurich and in 1956 at the same time professor at the ETH Zurich. In the mid-1950s he was head of the University's Zoological Museum. In 1956 he became director of the newly founded palaeontological institute and museum at the University of Zurich and in 1962 full professor of palaeontology. In 1970 he also became a professor at the ETH Zurich.

He dealt in particular with the marine fauna (fish, reptiles) of the famous Triassic fossil site of Monte San Giorgio in the Ticino Limestone Alps, which had first been tapped by the paleontologist of the University of Zurich Bernhard Peyer (1885–1963).

In 1968 he was elected a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . In 1971 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina , in 1971 he became an honorary member of the Upper Rhine Geological Association (OGV) , in 1972 an honorary member of the Paleontological Society and in 1973 an honorary member of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology . From 1967 he was an honorary citizen of Meride on Monte San Giorgio.
