The Upper Rhine Geological Association e. V. (OGV) is a non-profit association of geoscientists and friends of geology who deal with geology in the area of the Upper Rhine and its wider surroundings (southwest Germany). They have around 800 members (2011). The association is based in Karlsruhe, with the office in Stuttgart.

General

The association was founded in Bad Rotenfels in 1871 on the initiative of Adolph Knop . Other founding members besides Knop were Ernst Wilhelm Benecke , Johann Reinhard Blum , Emil Cohen , Leopold Heinrich Fischer , Alexander von Harder (1832-1880), Philipp Platz (1827-1900), Harry Rosenbusch , Friedrich Rose (1839-1925), Leonhard Sohncke , Wolfgang Moritz Vogelgesang and the Grand Ducal Chamberlain Wilhelm von Weiler (1807–1878).

Until 1896 the association was run by a "secretary":

The first chairman (1896) was the Heidelberg geologist Ernst Wilhelm Benecke with Gustav Steinmann as the first secretary.

They publish annual reports (Oberrheinischer Geologischer Verein annual reports and communications) - in 2017 already in their 99th year - and excursion guides and there is an annual conference in the week after Easter. For example, they campaign for geotopes and the preservation of geoscientific collections.

The chairmen included Wilhelm Salomon-Calvi (Wilhelm Salomon), Edwin Hennig , Gustav Klemm , Henning Illies , Manfred Gwinner . Richard Höfling is currently (2011–2019) Chairman.
