Friedrich Nies (mineralogist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Friedrich Nies (born May 10, 1839 in Leipzig , † September 22, 1895 in Hohenheim (Stuttgart) ) was a German geologist , mineralogist and paleontologist .

Life

Nies studied geology in Leipzig (with Carl Friedrich Naumann ) and Heidelberg and received his doctorate in Heidelberg with Gustav von Leonhard in 1863 with the elaboration A geological study of the Kaiserstuhl Mountains . Then he was a volunteer at the geological survey of Saxony under the direction of Naumann and later assistant to Fridolin Sandberger in Würzburg. Here he completed his habilitation in 1868 on the subject of contributions to the knowledge of Keuper in the Steigerwald and became a private lecturer . In 1874 he received a professorship for mineralogy and geology at the Agricultural University of Hohenheim , a newly created chair at the time. Nies was known as a good lecturer and was heavily involved in teaching (for example in setting up a rock and mineral collection at his university).

Nies researched the geology of Franconia , especially the Keuper in the Steigerwald, for which he also used comparisons in Württemberg and Alsace . To a lesser extent, Nies also dealt with paleontology.

Nies experimentally investigated the expansion of magmas (molten metals, silicates) during solidification.

As a hobby, Friedrich Nies collected exploitation coins , that is, coins on which the origin of the metal used was recorded.

In 1878 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina . From 1881 to 1895 he was secretary of the Upper Rhine Geological Association . His wife Marie Louise Elisabeth and his sister (Fräulein Nies) became honorary members of the Upper Rhine Geological Association on April 2, 1902.
