Wolfgang Moritz Vogelgesang

Wolfgang Moritz Vogelgesang (born July 29, 1826 in Dippoldiswalde , † October 4, 1888 in Mannheim ) was a German mining specialist , geologist, curator and high school professor.

Life

After home schooling, attending a lyceum and the Kreuzschule in Dresden, Wolfgang Moritz Vogelgesang began studying mining at the Freiberg Bergakademie in 1843 . In 1844 he became a member of the Corps Saxo-Borussia . He completed his academic training in 1847 and completed his practical training until 1848 at the old murder pit near Freiberg. From November 1848 he carried out some scientific investigations at the Commission for Geognostic Studies of the Kingdom of Saxony . In the years 1851 and 1852 he worked as a shift supervisor at various mines in the Freiberg Mining Authority area. In 1853 he became the first employee of the Gersdorfer Bergwerk Segen Gottes Erbstolln . In 1856 he moved to the Kinzigthaler Bergwerksgesellschaft as a mining engineer . After this had to cease operations in 1857, he changed at the end of the year as administrator of the iron ore mining in the Kinzig valley and the Hausach iron and steel works in Fürstlich Fürstenbergische Dienst. After managing the dissolution of these unprofitable activities in 1859, he was commissioned in 1860 to organize, set up and catalog the Princely Fürstenberg Natural History Collection in Hüfingen Castle .

At the end of 1863 he was commissioned to conduct a geognostic investigation and description of the Principality of Fürstenberg . From 1867 to 1869 he was involved in the geological survey commissioned by the Baden Ministry of Commerce. During this time he also gave public scientific lectures in Donaueschingen and Villingen, as a result of which he was appointed professor at the Mannheim Realgymnasium in September 1869 . In 1871/71 he put together a 600-piece geological school collection . In 1873 he became director of the grammar school, which he headed until his death.

In 1871 he was one of the founding members of the Upper Rhine Geological Association .
