Rudolf Trümpy

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rudolf "Rudi" Trümpy (born August 16, 1921 in Glarus ; † January 31, 2009 in Küsnacht ) was a Swiss geologist who made a significant contribution to research into the geology of the Alps .

Life

Trümpy was born into a family of geologists: his father and three of his uncles worked as geologists in the oil industry . Although his father did not particularly support his geological interest, he began studying geology at the ETH Zurich and graduated in 1947 with a doctoral thesis on the lower Jura of the Swiss Alps ("The Lias of the Glarner Alps"). Between 1947 and 1953 he did his postdoctoral studies in Lausanne , where he met and married his wife. After the sudden death of his institute director Elie Gagnebin, he took over the acting management of the facility. In 1953 he was appointed professor at the ETH Zurich. In 1956 the University of Zurich appointed him associate professor ad personam and later professor ad personam for stratigraphy . He held both positions until his retirement in 1986 and was head of the geological institutes at both universities. He was also a member of several national committees and chaired the IUGS . From 1991 to 1996 he was chairman of the geology and palaeontology section of the Leopoldina .

Research areas

His research focused primarily on the geology of the Alps. In 1960 he published his work on the tectonic development of the Western and Central Alps, which was the cornerstone for his international recognition. During his time as a professor in Zurich, he supervised a large number of diploma theses and dissertations on geological problems in western and central Switzerland, and in 1969 published an article on the Glarus nappes in eastern Switzerland, which he described as his best work. In addition to numerous individual articles on special topics, his contributions to the geology of Switzerland, which have been published in several geological excursion guides, should also be mentioned. In his Geology of Switzerland in particular , he summarized the knowledge about the structure of the Alps in a clear manner. In addition, he published works on extra-alpine regions such as Greenland , the Montagne Noire or the Sahara .

Awards and honors

Trümpy has received many awards and honors, including the Eduard Sueß commemorative coin of the Austrian Geological Society in 1985 and the Penrose Medal in the same year . In 1998 he was awarded the Gustav Steinmann Medal of the Geological Association , in 2002 he received the Wollaston Medal . In 1973 he received the Leopold von Buch badge . In 1979 he became an honorary member of the Upper Rhine Geological Association (OGV) . In 1978 he was admitted to the National Academy of Sciences and in 1980 to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In 1983 he was elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .
