The Austrian Geological Society  ( ÖGeolG or ÖGG ) is a scientific association of geologists in Austria and cooperation partners abroad.

Structure and tasks

The objectives formulated in 1907 are still valid today:

  • Coordination of the cooperation among the Austrian geologists
  • Contacting foreign colleagues and companies
  • Cooperation between scientific and applied geology
  • Maintaining the versatility of all geological work directions
  • Dissemination of geological knowledge and new research results
  • Society's openness to anyone interested in geological issues.

The society currently has around 500 members.

Its activities, the annual publication of the Austrian Journal of Earth Sciences is one (ehem. Releases the Austrian Geological Society ), which in the exchange of publications in more than 200 foreign professional associations, universities will be sent etc.. Regular specialist lectures are held in the cities of Vienna, Salzburg, Innsbruck and Graz . There are also excursions and workshops or courses on special topics .

In addition to three regional groups and a junior section, the society maintains working groups on the following topics:

  • Digital geology
  • Petroleum geology
  • Earth Sciences, School and Public
  • History of Earth Sciences
  • Engineering geology
  • stratigraphy
  • Defense geology

The Secretariat of the ÖGG is run by the Federal Geological Institute  (GBA) in Vienna.

It was founded in Vienna in 1907 as the Geological Society in Vienna and was given its current name in 1976.

Publications

Since 1908, the Geological Society has published the notices annually in addition to the association news . The magazine has been called the Austrian Journal of Earth Sciences since 2004 and publishes in English. Since September 2018, AJES has been published as an open access journal owned by the ÖGG in the online publisher Sciendo and can be downloaded there for free, article by article.
