Wilhelm Hammer (geologist)

Wilhelm Hammer (born November 13, 1875 in Feldkirch , Vorarlberg, † December 26, 1942 in Innsbruck , Tyrol) was an Austrian geologist.

Life

Wilhelm Hammer studied at the University of Innsbruck , passed the teaching examination in 1899 and obtained a doctorate in medicine. phil. In 1901 he joined the Imperial and Royal Geological Institute , later the Federal Geological Institute, of which he was director from 1932 to 1935.

His main activity was the geological exploration and new recording of the Tyrolean Central Alps . The upper Ennstal and the Kitzbühel Alps were also his research goals.

In 1920 and 1921 he was also chairman of the Geological Society .

He was an excellent mountaineer. He was the first to climb the Dremelspitze with Ampferer .
