Marta Cornelius-Furlani

Marta Cornelius-Furlani , née Furlani, (born July 4, 1886 in Trieste , Austria-Hungary , † June 20, 1974 in Purkersdorf ) was an Austrian geologist and teacher.

Furlani studied geology at the University of Vienna from 1905 under Viktor Uhlig and Karl Diener and was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD . This made her the first woman at the University of Vienna to receive a doctorate in this subject. In 1911 she passed the teaching examination and then worked as a teacher until her retirement in 1944. In 1921 she married the geologist Hans Peter Cornelius , whose close collaborator she was. From 1945 Cornelius-Furlani was a volunteer at the Natural History Museum Vienna . From 1951 to 1952 she was president and from 1958 honorary member of the Geological Society in Vienna . Buried at Vienna Central Cemetery, Group 0, grave 237.
