Victor Uhlig

Viktor Uhlig , also Victor Karl , (born January 2, 1857 in Leskowetz , Austrian Silesia , † June 4, 1911 in Karlsbad ) was an Austrian geologist and paleontologist .

Life

Uhlig studied at the universities of Graz and Vienna. After completing his studies, he was an assistant at the Vienna University of Paleontology from 1877 to 1883 . In 1881 he worked at the Imperial Geological Institute until 1890. From 1891 Uhlig taught at the German University in Prague until he was appointed as a paleontologist and then as professor of geology at the University of Vienna in 1900, where he remained until his death. In 1894 he became a corresponding member, in 1901 a full member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences . In 1907 he was a co-founder and first president of the Vienna Geological Society . In 1910 he was elected deputy chairman of the newly founded Geological Association .

The Leopoldina honored him in 1909 as an author of particularly important scientific work with the Cothenius Medal. In 1899 he had already been elected a member of the Leopoldina.

In addition to the Eastern Alps, he was particularly interested in the geology and paleontology of the Carpathian Mountains . He belonged to the Evangelical Church and took an active part in public life.

There are contradicting information about his place of death. According to the municipal calendar, Uhlig died in Vienna, Eduard Suess , Uhlig's predecessor at the chair for geology in Vienna, but stated in his obituary that Uhlig was different in Karlsbad in the arms of his devoted wife . In the same issue of the Neue Freie Presse is from Uhlig's disease professor reported that resulted in Karlovy Vary in the sanatorium of the surgeon Fink to severe and ultimately fatal gallstone surgery. The body of the scholar was buried on June 7, 1911 in the Protestant cemetery of Prague -Strašnice (Praha-Strašnice).

In 1956 Uhligstrasse in Vienna- Favoriten was named after him.
