Rudolf Hoernes (born October 7, 1850 in Vienna , † August 20, 1912 in Judendorf-Straßengel in Styria ) was an Austrian geologist and paleontologist .

Life

Rudolf was born as the son of the director of the then kk Hof-Mineralien-Kabinett Moriz Hoernes . His mother, née Strauss, was the sister of the wife of the geology professor Eduard Suess . One of his brothers was the professor at the Vienna University Moriz Hoernes , who became known as a prehistoric scientist . His daughter Tanna became a graphic artist and was married to the artist Luigi Kasimir .

After completing his high school and university studies in Vienna, he entered the Imperial Geological Institute as an intern in 1873 , of which he was a member until 1876. On June 5, 1876, he was appointed associate professor of geology at the University of Graz . During his work as a section geologist at the Geological Reichsanstalt in Vienna, Hoernes made geological recordings in South Tyrol and the neighboring parts of Veneto and published numerous reports on them.

In addition, Hoernes was also active in the palaeontological field and even then it was evident that he had a preference for comparative research on fossils of tertiary age. At that time he described conchylies from Croatia, southern Styria, Hungary and the area around Vienna. In 1875 his work on the fauna of the Schliers von Ottnang appeared in the yearbook of the Imperial Geological Institute.

From Graz, Hoernes enriched the literature with studies that now also extended to vertebrate finds. He published a lot in the "Mitteilungen des Naturwissenschaftlichen Verein für Steiermark", which he edited for several years.

From 1878 onwards, Hoernes showed a keen interest in studying earthquake phenomena. He also became earthquake consultant for Styria and published numerous reports on the old and new earthquakes noticed in Styria.
