Otto Wilhelm Hermann von Abich (born December 11, 1806 in Berlin , † July 1, 1886 in Vienna ) was a German mineralogist , geologist and explorer.

Life

Abich was the son of the Brunswick mountain councilor Heinrich Abich and the daughter of the chemist Martin Heinrich Klaproth , Johanna Wilhelmine. Father and grandfather on his father's side were mountain officials and tenants of the Schöningen saltworks .

Work and work

Abich delivered his first scientific work on spinels and other minerals . He later studied fumaroles , minerals near volcanoes, and the structures of volcanoes. In 1842 he was appointed professor of mineralogy at the University of Dorpat and between 1850 and 1880 he made frequent trips to Armenia and the Caucasus countries. In 1853 he became a member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences and in 1858 a corresponding member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences . He was a corresponding member of the Académie des sciences since 1879. He was a member of the Society of German Natural Scientists and Doctors . From 1877 he lived in Vienna. He had previously visited Tbilisi and studied the geology of the Caucasus .

The mineral abichite , German for clinoclase , was named after him.
