The Austrian Mineralogical Society , or ÖMG for short  , is the professional representation of mineralogists in Austria .

Structure and tasks

The association is a scientific association for the promotion of the entire mineralogical sciences: mineralogy , crystallography , petrology and geochemistry . The ÖMG currently has around 270 members who can be both natural persons and institutions.

In addition to publication and public relations, she also represents Austria in the International Mineralogical Association  (IMA).

The secretariat of the ÖGG is at the Mineralogical-Petrographic Department of the Natural History Museum Vienna .

history

It was founded in 1901 as the Vienna Mineralogical Society by Friedrich Becke and Friedrich Martin Berwerth and the first president was Gustav Tschermak . It has had its current name since 1950.

Honors awarded

The society awards the Friedrich Becke Medal , named after the mineralogist Friedrich Johann Karl Becke , and the Felix Machatschki Prize .
