Karl Franz Johann Chudoba (born August 10, 1898 in Wratzow , Moravia, † March 14, 1976 in Göttingen ) was a mineralogist and petrologist and rector of the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Bonn .

Life

After obtaining his doctorate (1924) and habilitation (1929) in Bonn, Chudoba worked as an assistant at the Mineralogical-Petrographic Institute at the University of Bonn. After the " seizure of power " by the National Socialists , he joined the NSDAP and the SA in 1933 and became a training director for the local NSDAP group. In 1935 Chudoba became deputy head of the Nazi lecturers' association and an adjunct professor at the University of Bonn, where in 1938 he rose to full professor and director of the mineralogical-petrological institute.

Chudoba was the Gaudozentenbundführer of Cologne-Aachen from March 1938 to 1945. In this function he gave the “ War Lectures of the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn a. Rh “. From November 1939 to March 1945 he was also rector of the University of Bonn; In the period from April 1941 to early 1942 he served as a first lieutenant in the reserve in the Wehrmacht. On January 30, 1941, Chudoba granted honorary academic citizenship to SA Oberführer Landesrat Dr. Hans Joachim Apffelstaedt . Chudoba was (1942) Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Joseph von Görres Prize.

A small group of professors around Chudoba (including Erich Feldmann and Kurt Tackenberg ) moved to Göttingen at the beginning of 1945, after the university closed in the winter semester of 1944/45, before the advancing allies with Chudobas, an institute that was considered to be important to the war effort. There, even after the occupation of Bonn by US troops, the administration was held with the formation of a separate, self-sufficient rectorate, although the Prorector Theodor Brinkmann, who remained in Bonn, had already negotiated with the occupying power to continue the university.

After the war, Professor Paul Martini from Bonn , who had treated Chudoba for a long time for a heart disease, stated that he had always refused to commit personal injustice and indecency for political reasons.

Chudoba, who in the post-war period was initially only a professor for re-use (according to the 1951 law regulating the legal relationships of persons falling under Article 131 of the Basic Law ), retired in 1966.

Services

The special mineralogy and the jewelry and precious stone studies were Chudoba's main areas of work. A manual published by him together with Reinhard Brauns saw numerous editions.
