Rudolf Koechlin

Rudolf Ignaz Koechlin (born November 11, 1862 in Vienna ; † February 11, 1939 there ) was an Austrian mineralogist .

Life

Rudolf Koechlin was the son of an architect, his mother Maria Ferstel was the sister of the architect Heinrich von Ferstel . His brother-in-law was the mineralogist Aristides Brezina . He came to mineralogy through the mineral collection of his uncle FM von Friese. He studied natural sciences, mathematics and especially geosciences at the University of Vienna and received his doctorate in 1887 with a dissertation in mineralogy. Gustav Tschermak and Albrecht Schrauf were among his teachers . From 1884 he was a volunteer at the mineral cabinet of the Natural History Museum in Vienna and organized the move to the new premises on the Ring in Vienna. In 1912 he became curator 1st class and in 1920 director of the mineralogical-petrographic department of the museum. In 1922 he became a councilor and retired. In the same year he became a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.

Koechlin mainly dealt with minerals from the Tauern area . He was a member of the Vienna Mineralogical Society and contributed to the Mineralogical Paperback (1911) published by them. He is considered to be the first to describe the mineral laurionite .

The mineral koechlinite was named in his honor.
