From 1852 to 1856 he studied physics, mathematics, mineralogy and botany at the University of Vienna , among others with Wilhelm Josef Grailich .

In 1862 he received his Mag. Artium liberalium from the University of Tübingen and obtained his doctorate . phil. He became custodian at the kk Hofmineralienkabinett. In 1863 he completed his habilitation for physical mineralogy at the University of Vienna. In 1867 he became second and the following year first curator at the Mineralienkabinett. In 1874 he became both a full university professor and head of the Mineralogical Museum at the University of Vienna. In 1887/1888 he was also dean of the faculty.

In the years 1863/1864 he began cataloging Archduke Stephen's mineral and crystal collection in the Schaumburg Palace in Hesse as part of study trips . After the Archduke died in 1867, however, he was unable to complete this assignment. He was also unable to complete his atlas, for which he created all the crystal images from scratch, for financial reasons.

As a result he mainly dealt with the chemical structure of minerals. He also expanded the institute, primarily with new teaching aids.

In 1896 he became blind in one eye in an accident. In the following year, Schrauf also quickly lost sight of the second eye. As a result, he was very shy of contact and lonely.
