Walther Emil Wilhelm Petrascheck (born March 11, 1906 in Vienna ; † October 30, 1991 there ) was an Austrian geologist.

Life

Petrascheck is the son of Wilhelm Petrascheck , who was professor of geology, paleontology and deposit theory at the Montanuniversität Leoben from 1918 to 1950. He studied natural sciences and especially geology at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen , the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München , the Montanistische Hochschule Leoben , the TH Graz and the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen . He wrote his doctoral thesis on the Solling with Hans Stille . In 1930 he was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD. He then worked as an assistant in Leoben and at the Silesian Friedrich Wilhelms University . He completed his habilitation in Breslau in 1935 and was appointed associate professor in 1940 . After he had participated as a soldier in World War II, he was awarded in 1949 with Franz Czedik-Eysenberg the Corp loop of the Corps shaft Leoben . In 1950 he was appointed professor of geology and deposit theory at the Montanuniversität Leoben and developed the field of study in mining geology. In 1953/54 he was rector . In 1976 he retired. In 1969 he was elected to the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina . Since 1978 he has been a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . After 1960 he resigned from the Schacht Corps "because of tendencies that were too nationalistic and out of date". He dealt in particular with deposit science , which he dealt with from overriding tectonic points of view, initially that of his teacher Stille and later plate tectonics. From him comes the term "Arch Province" in this context. With his father he wrote a standard work about it.
