Franz Angel

Franz Angel (born January 1, 1887 in Urfahr , Upper Austria ; † May 4, 1974 in Graz , Styria ) was an Austrian mineralogist , petrograph and university professor .

Life

Born in Upper Austria, Franz Angel devoted himself to studying geology , mineralogy and petrography at the universities of Vienna and Graz after graduating from the secondary school in Linz . Franz Angel, a student of Rudolf Hoernes , Vincent Hilber , Joseph Anton ribs, Cornelio August Doelter and Rudolf Scharizer , was founded in 1909 in Graz to Dr. phil. in the following year he completed his studies with the teaching examination in natural history , mathematics and physics .

After working as an assistant for a year at the Mineralogical-Petrographic Institute at the University of Graz, he took on short-term positions as a secondary school teacher at the grammar school in Wels and at the commercial academy in Graz, before moving to the regional high school in Graz in 1912, a position that he held until 1931. In addition, he did research on petrography and mineralogy in his spare time.

In 1920 he completed his habilitation as a private lecturer in the subjects of mineralogy and petrography at the University of Graz, and in 1925 he was promoted to associate professor . In 1931 Franz Angel was appointed to succeed Rudolf Scharizer as full professor and head of the Institute for Mineralogy and Petrography. Franz Angel also chaired the Natural Science Association for Styria from 1937 and was a member of the board of the German Mineralogical Society from 1938 to 1944 .

In May 1938 Angel became a member of the NSDAP . From 1941 to 1945 he was the managing lecturer union leader at the University of Graz. He also worked as a lecturer for the party official examination commission for the protection of National Socialist literature .

The retired from the British occupation forces after the end of the Second World War , who was interned for a short time, then worked as an independent specialist advisor for mineralogy and petrography until 1948.

Franz Angel, who researched in particular the rock world of the crystalline of the Gleinalpe , died in 1974 at the age of 87 in Graz.

He was a member of the Cheruskia Graz fraternity .
